James got to know Mulatu though playing with the Heliocentrics, touring and playing on the seminal album Inspiration Information Vol III. In 2010 he was asked to rehearse Mulatu’s music with the Australian band The Black Jesus Experience and subsequently played at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Since then James has worked with Mulatu in South Africa with Marus Wyatt, in Brazil with rapper Criolo and performs regularly all over the world as Musical Director and saxophonist with Mulatu’s London Based band. In 2017 James collaborated with US keyboardist Jason Lindner and toured the USA with an American band (including drummer Marcus Gilmore) playing Mulatu’s music. James regularly performs in major festivals and concert halls with Mulatu.
